Postpartum isn’t just physical recovery after birth, it’s the beginning of becoming a mother. In this episode, we talk about what postpartum really feels like and why so many women feel overwhelmed, anxious, or unlike themselves after having a baby.

If you felt prepared for birth but unprepared for postpartum, you are not alone. Many new moms experience intense changes, including hormone shifts, sleep deprivation, and pressure to feel confident. This can lead to thoughts like “something is wrong with me,” which often fuels anxiety, self-doubt, and shame.

We break down the difference between normal postpartum adjustment and signs of postpartum anxiety or postpartum depression, including persistent worry, intrusive thoughts, hopelessness, or feeling disconnected, and when to seek support.

We also introduce matrescence, or “the birth of a mother,” to explain the rapid identity shift that affects your body, emotions, relationships, and sense of self.

You will learn simple tools to manage overwhelming moments, including grounding techniques, breathwork, and understanding emotional waves.

Whether you are pregnant or navigating life with a newborn, this episode will help you feel more informed, supported, and confident.

00:00:28.820 --> 00:00:30.980
Hi friend, welcome back.

00:00:31.219 --> 00:00:35.539
If you're pregnant right now, you're probably spending a lot of time preparing for birth.

00:00:35.700 --> 00:00:40.500
Maybe you're reading books or taking classes or thinking about what kind of birth you want.

00:00:40.740 --> 00:00:45.700
But one of the biggest surprises for new moms isn't actually labor or delivery.

00:00:45.859 --> 00:00:47.299
It's postpartum.

00:00:47.460 --> 00:00:54.500
Because while a lot of people prepare you for the baby, very few prepare you for what it actually feels like to become a mother.

00:00:54.739 --> 00:01:01.380
I was one of those moms that was completely surprised by it, even though I was already a nurse when my first baby was born.

00:01:01.539 --> 00:01:06.819
I had worked in postpartum and I had worked in the nursery caring for dozens of babies at the same time.

00:01:07.060 --> 00:01:11.379
But when it was my baby, suddenly one baby felt overwhelming.

00:01:11.620 --> 00:01:18.099
And I remember saying to a friend of mine who already had two kids, I'm really hoping things get back to normal soon.

00:01:18.340 --> 00:01:21.859
And she looked at me and said something I'll never forget.

00:01:22.099 --> 00:01:24.819
She said, that probably won't happen.

00:01:25.140 --> 00:01:28.180
You just start getting accustomed to the new normal.

00:01:28.420 --> 00:01:32.180
That moment changed my expectations in a really important way.

00:01:32.659 --> 00:01:42.739
Because what many moms don't realize is that postpartum isn't just recovery from birth, it's the beginning of becoming a completely new version of yourself.

00:01:42.980 --> 00:01:51.060
And in this clip from the Birth Journeys podcast, my guest Emily Finnell describes something I hear from moms all the time.

00:01:51.299 --> 00:01:54.579
But many women feel too ashamed to say it out loud.

00:01:54.819 --> 00:01:55.780
Take a listen.

00:01:56.099 --> 00:02:04.900
So I am so passionate about this topic because I straight up thought I was going crazy after I had a baby.

00:02:05.140 --> 00:02:09.780
And I felt betrayed by everyone who had ever had babies that they didn't tell me that I was going to feel this way.

00:02:10.019 --> 00:02:11.219
Yeah, it's a lot.

00:02:11.459 --> 00:02:12.099
It can be.

00:02:12.259 --> 00:02:12.900
And that's the thing.

00:02:13.219 --> 00:02:15.780
Everybody's postpartum experience is unique.

00:02:16.579 --> 00:02:21.780
And so I think in a way we don't want to scare people and be like, oh, you might feel crazy.

00:02:21.860 --> 00:02:22.740
Because what if they don't?

00:02:22.900 --> 00:02:24.900
Because then I remember seeing my sister-in-law.

00:02:25.139 --> 00:02:28.019
She was like so chill and relaxed after she had her first baby.

00:02:28.099 --> 00:02:28.900
And I'm like, what is that?

00:02:28.980 --> 00:02:30.019
What did what are you doing?

00:02:30.099 --> 00:02:31.459
Like, how are you doing that?

00:02:31.620 --> 00:02:33.379
Because I it just wasn't my experience.

00:02:33.540 --> 00:02:36.019
Yeah, I was, I was just a mess.

00:02:36.340 --> 00:02:41.539
And I felt so invalidated by people that were just like relaxed and in their element.

00:02:41.620 --> 00:02:43.060
I'm like, how are you not panicked?

00:02:43.139 --> 00:02:44.099
That yeah, like art.

00:02:44.979 --> 00:02:47.379
I felt fear and a lot of self-judgment.

00:02:47.539 --> 00:02:48.819
Yeah, same and shame.

00:02:49.139 --> 00:02:53.620
I want to pause here because what Emily is describing is incredibly common.

00:02:53.860 --> 00:02:58.340
So many moms quietly believe they are the only person struggling after birth.

00:02:58.580 --> 00:03:04.659
They look around and see other moms who seem calm, confident, and like they have everything together.

00:03:04.740 --> 00:03:08.020
And they think, why does this feel so hard for me?

00:03:08.340 --> 00:03:16.900
But what many people don't realize is that postpartum is one of the most intense physical and emotional transitions a human body can go through.

00:03:17.060 --> 00:03:20.340
Right after birth, hormones drop dramatically.

00:03:20.580 --> 00:03:28.500
In addition to that, you're physically recovering, you're sleep deprived, you're learning to care for a completely dependent newborn.

00:03:28.659 --> 00:03:33.539
And at the same time, you're becoming a completely new version of yourself.

00:03:33.780 --> 00:03:43.460
So if you feel overwhelmed, anxious, emotional, or unsure of yourself after having a baby, that doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong with you.

00:03:43.699 --> 00:03:45.460
It means you're human.

00:03:45.699 --> 00:03:48.099
But sometimes the story gets even heavier.

00:03:48.340 --> 00:03:49.460
Listen to this next part.

00:03:49.860 --> 00:03:54.580
My core thought was there's something wrong with me, which was think about how that plays out, right?

00:03:54.740 --> 00:03:55.219
Mm-hmm.

00:03:55.379 --> 00:03:57.379
Because then it's just everything I did.

00:03:57.460 --> 00:03:59.060
It was like, what's wrong with me?

00:03:59.139 --> 00:04:00.020
Why would I act this way?

00:04:00.180 --> 00:04:01.219
Why am I feeling this way?

00:04:01.300 --> 00:04:02.180
And it just spiraled.

00:04:02.340 --> 00:04:04.900
I would just spiral, so many spirals of anxiety.

00:04:05.139 --> 00:04:07.379
This is where so many moms get stuck.

00:04:07.620 --> 00:04:10.099
That thought, something is wrong with me.

00:04:10.340 --> 00:04:18.500
When moms feel anxious, overwhelmed, irritable, or emotional after birth, they often assume they must be failing somehow.

00:04:18.659 --> 00:04:23.300
But in truth, there are multiple reasons postpartum can feel this way.

00:04:23.539 --> 00:04:31.379
Sometimes it's hormonal, sometimes it's the identity shift that comes with being a mother, sometimes it's lack of support.

00:04:31.620 --> 00:04:38.740
And sometimes it can be something that deserves real medical attention, like postpartum anxiety or postpartum depression.

00:04:38.899 --> 00:04:41.460
And that's incredibly important to talk about.

00:04:41.620 --> 00:05:01.939
Because if what you're experiencing includes things like persistent anxiety, disturbing intrusive thoughts that happen multiple times a day, feeling constantly overwhelmed, feeling disconnected from your baby, difficulty sleeping even when the baby sleeps, or feeling hopeless, that is not something you have to push through alone.

00:05:02.180 --> 00:05:07.379
There are providers, therapists, medications, and support systems that can help.

00:05:07.540 --> 00:05:09.860
Reaching out for help is not failure.

00:05:10.019 --> 00:05:11.459
It's self-care.

00:05:12.100 --> 00:05:18.019
And part of the reason postpartum can feel so intense is something we don't talk about nearly enough.

00:05:18.259 --> 00:05:20.500
It's something called matrescence.

00:05:20.899 --> 00:05:21.779
Listen to this.

00:05:22.100 --> 00:05:27.139
There's a word, and I'm not even sure if I'm pronouncing it right, matrescence or whatever, where it's like, I don't know this word.

00:05:27.699 --> 00:05:30.819
This word means the birth of a mother.

00:05:31.220 --> 00:05:31.540
Oh.

00:05:32.259 --> 00:05:35.459
So you're not just having a birth of a baby.

00:05:36.500 --> 00:05:42.339
You're becoming a whole new person physically, emotionally, and it's like an identity shift.

00:05:42.579 --> 00:05:46.899
It's it's like literally, it's like going through puberty immediately.

00:05:47.139 --> 00:05:47.459
Yeah.

00:05:47.620 --> 00:05:49.699
It's a greater shift than menopause.

00:05:49.860 --> 00:05:50.740
It's a greater shift than that.

00:05:50.899 --> 00:05:52.100
It happens that fast.

00:05:52.500 --> 00:05:52.819
Instinct.

00:05:53.139 --> 00:05:57.060
Matrescence is a term used to describe the birth of a mother.

00:05:57.300 --> 00:06:03.860
Just like adolescence is the transition into adulthood, matrescence is the transition into motherhood.

00:06:04.019 --> 00:06:15.379
And it affects everything: your hormones, your identity, your relationships, your priorities, your body, your emotions, your sense of self.

00:06:15.540 --> 00:06:17.779
And it happens incredibly fast.

00:06:18.019 --> 00:06:23.699
So if you feel like you don't recognize yourself after having a baby, you may not be imagining that.

00:06:23.939 --> 00:06:25.939
You're becoming someone new.

00:06:26.259 --> 00:06:32.899
But in the middle of all that change, there are tools that can help you navigate big emotions when they come up.

00:06:33.139 --> 00:06:34.740
Here's one that Emily shares.

00:06:35.060 --> 00:06:43.220
I learned that you actually cannot feel a sensation of an emotion for more than 90 seconds in your body.

00:06:43.779 --> 00:06:45.620
Unless you're looping in a story.

00:06:45.860 --> 00:06:51.300
So if you unplug from the story, instead I just felt the sensation, it washed through, and then I was able to ground.

00:06:51.620 --> 00:06:59.620
When we experience an emotion in our body, fear, anger, sadness, anxiety, there's usually a physical sensation first.

00:07:00.019 --> 00:07:01.939
Your heart might be racing.

00:07:02.100 --> 00:07:04.339
You might feel tightness in your chest.

00:07:04.500 --> 00:07:07.459
You might feel that sense of panic or overwhelm.

00:07:07.620 --> 00:07:11.540
And that physical wave usually passes relatively quickly.

00:07:11.779 --> 00:07:16.500
But what often keeps the feeling going is the story we tell ourselves about it.

00:07:16.660 --> 00:07:18.500
Things like something is wrong with me.

00:07:18.660 --> 00:07:20.100
I shouldn't feel this way.

00:07:20.259 --> 00:07:23.459
And those thoughts can keep us stuck in that spiral.

00:07:23.779 --> 00:07:26.899
Because in those moments, it's not about fixing everything.

00:07:27.060 --> 00:07:29.620
It's about helping your body feel safe again.

00:07:29.779 --> 00:07:32.740
So here are a few simple tools that can help.

00:07:32.980 --> 00:07:35.139
First, just name what you're feeling.

00:07:35.379 --> 00:07:39.540
Even something as simple as, I feel really overwhelmed right now.

00:07:39.860 --> 00:07:41.379
My heart is racing.

00:07:41.540 --> 00:07:42.899
I feel anxious.

00:07:43.220 --> 00:07:45.379
And then validate it.

00:07:45.620 --> 00:07:53.540
Instead of jumping to why am I feeling like this or this shouldn't be happening, you can say, it makes sense that I feel this way.

00:07:53.860 --> 00:07:55.300
This is a lot right now.

00:07:55.459 --> 00:07:56.899
Of course I'm overwhelmed.

00:07:57.060 --> 00:07:58.339
I just had a baby.

00:07:58.579 --> 00:08:04.019
That shift alone can move you out of self-judgment and into a place of support.

00:08:04.660 --> 00:08:07.220
Second, slow your breathing down.

00:08:07.459 --> 00:08:14.259
You can try something like inhale through your nose for four seconds, exhale slowly for six.

00:08:14.660 --> 00:08:18.980
That longer exhale helps signal to your body that you are safe.

00:08:19.220 --> 00:08:22.740
And third, orient yourself to your environment.

00:08:22.980 --> 00:08:27.860
Look around and name a few things you can see, hear, or touch.

00:08:28.180 --> 00:08:33.299
This helps bring you out of that internal spiral and back into the present moment.

00:08:33.940 --> 00:08:36.899
But I also want to be really clear about something.

00:08:37.139 --> 00:08:40.819
These tools can be helpful for managing moments of overwhelm.

00:08:40.980 --> 00:08:51.059
But if what you're experiencing feels persistent, intense, or like it's interfering with your ability to function, that's when support from a provider or a therapist is really important.

00:08:51.379 --> 00:08:57.940
And there is absolutely no shame in asking for help, because motherhood was never meant to be done alone.

00:08:58.339 --> 00:09:03.299
Postpartum isn't just recovery from birth, it's the birth of a mother.

00:09:03.460 --> 00:09:09.620
And that transition deserves support, compassion, education, and understanding.

00:09:10.019 --> 00:09:16.820
So if you're pregnant and preparing for this season, or if you're already in it and thinking, why does this feel so hard?

00:09:17.059 --> 00:09:18.659
I just want you to hear this.

00:09:18.899 --> 00:09:20.659
You're not doing anything wrong.

00:09:20.899 --> 00:09:22.740
This is a real transition.

00:09:23.139 --> 00:09:25.379
And you don't have to navigate it alone.

00:09:25.620 --> 00:09:32.100
