Birth feels different when the room feels safe. We dig into how to choose a doula by focusing on connection, clarity, and calm rather than running a rigid checklist. Instead of quizzing someone for the “right” answers, we map the questions that actually reveal fit: their vibe during intensity, their range across home and hospital births, and how they help you stay informed without pushing an agenda. If your goal is a steadier nervous system and a smoother decision path, this conversation gives you the language to get there.

We break down what to ask and why it matters: how they describe their style, the types of births they’ve supported, their comfort with inductions and c-sections, and how they collaborate with nurses and providers when decisions move quickly. You’ll hear how to screen for flexibility and respect for your choices, plus the cues that signal a red flag—like fighting the hospital rather than helping you navigate it. We also cover communication plans, on-call timing, when they typically join you in labor, and how they include partners so your support team works as one.

Backups and advocacy round it out. You’ll learn how to ask about backup doulas and why a quick intro can ease last-minute stress. Then we define real advocacy in the hospital: making space for your voice, slowing moments for consent, and protecting your presence without speaking over others. By the end, you’ll know which few questions to ask, what a good answer sounds like, and how to trust the feeling in your body when the fit is right. If you’re planning a hospital birth, exploring unmedicated options, or anywhere in between, this guide helps you choose support that aligns with your values.

If this helped you get clear, follow the show, share it with someone planning their birth, and leave a quick review so others can find it. And if you want my notes from this video, comment “notes” below.

00:00:57.000 --> 00:01:03.240
Hello! Today let's talk about something that can make an enormous difference in how supported we feel during birth.

00:01:03.399 --> 00:01:04.599
Choosing the right doula.

00:01:05.400 --> 00:01:10.200
In this video, I'm going to share how to interview doulas so you find the right fit for you.

00:01:10.359 --> 00:01:15.159
But before we begin, if you want my notes from this video, comment notes below.

00:01:15.400 --> 00:01:21.240
Now when we talk about interviewing doulas, I don't mean grilling someone with a list of questions or trying to impress them.

00:01:21.400 --> 00:01:22.759
This isn't a job interview.

00:01:22.840 --> 00:01:24.280
It's a connection interview.

00:01:24.520 --> 00:01:27.799
Because when we're in labor, the energy in the room matters.

00:01:28.039 --> 00:01:30.120
The people beside us matter.

00:01:30.359 --> 00:01:33.480
And a doula isn't just someone who shows up with techniques.

00:01:33.640 --> 00:01:37.640
It's someone who helps us feel steady, safe, and truly seen.

00:01:37.799 --> 00:01:46.680
So today we're walking through the kinds of questions that help us understand whether someone's energy, experience, and philosophy actually align with our birth values.

00:01:46.840 --> 00:01:59.879
And if you're working with me in prenatal coaching, this is exactly the part where I help you narrow down what you're looking for, what questions matter most for your birth vision, and how to spot the signs of a truly aligned doula.

00:02:04.040 --> 00:02:09.400
You're looking for someone whose energy feels safe, warm, and aligned with what matters most to you.

00:02:09.560 --> 00:02:11.240
You're not auditioning for them.

00:02:11.480 --> 00:02:13.319
They're not auditioning for you.

00:02:13.560 --> 00:02:15.719
You're just seeing if there's a connection.

00:02:15.879 --> 00:02:21.800
So here are some questions you might want to ask to help you figure out if this is the right doula for your birth.

00:02:21.959 --> 00:02:25.800
Not a checklist, not a test, just real talk from one human to another.

00:02:26.040 --> 00:02:27.159
Start with who they are.

00:02:27.319 --> 00:02:28.759
What made them want to be a doula?

00:02:29.079 --> 00:02:31.959
What is their favorite part of being with families during birth?

00:02:32.199 --> 00:02:33.800
How would they describe their vibe?

00:02:33.959 --> 00:02:36.680
More hands-on, more calming and observant?

00:02:36.919 --> 00:02:38.360
Ask about experience.

00:02:38.520 --> 00:02:40.520
What kind of births have they supported?

00:02:40.759 --> 00:02:43.240
Home, hospital, medicated, unmedicated?

00:02:43.479 --> 00:02:46.919
Have they supported clients through inductions or c-sections?

00:02:47.159 --> 00:02:50.039
And how do they support families when medical needs come up?

00:02:50.280 --> 00:02:57.560
This is a great way to gently screen for dualists who can stay calm and supportive without pushing an agenda if things get more clinical.

00:02:57.800 --> 00:03:03.400
You want someone who's flexible and respectful of your choices, not someone who sees every intervention as a problem.

00:03:03.639 --> 00:03:09.240
If you're planning a hospital birth or might have one, these next questions are gold.

00:03:09.560 --> 00:03:14.919
Ask if they are comfortable working around hospital equipment if you end up needing an induction.

00:03:15.159 --> 00:03:23.719
Ask how they typically interact with the hospital staff and what their approach is when there are medical decisions to be made or things start to move quickly.

00:03:23.960 --> 00:03:26.680
You are not looking for someone who's going to fight the hospital.

00:03:26.840 --> 00:03:33.479
You're looking for someone who respects the space, works well with the team, and helps you feel steady and informed through the process.

00:03:33.719 --> 00:03:41.319
You can even say something like, It's really important to me that my doula supports me in navigating the system and not fighting it for me.

00:03:41.479 --> 00:03:44.360
That kind of clarity can save you a lot of stress later.

00:03:44.599 --> 00:03:46.520
Ask the doula how they communicate.

00:03:46.680 --> 00:03:49.000
What kind of support do they offer before labor?

00:03:49.240 --> 00:03:51.080
Texts, calls, visits?

00:03:51.319 --> 00:03:54.919
When do they go on call and when do they typically join you in labor?

00:03:55.080 --> 00:03:57.879
Some doulas like to come early and stay for the long haul.

00:03:58.039 --> 00:03:59.960
Others wait until labor is more active.

00:04:00.120 --> 00:04:02.360
There's no right or wrong, just what works for you.

00:04:02.520 --> 00:04:04.599
Ask about your partner or support person.

00:04:04.759 --> 00:04:08.120
How do they help involve your partner or the support team?

00:04:08.360 --> 00:04:11.319
Ask if they guide them or teach them how to support you.

00:04:11.560 --> 00:04:13.800
A good doula doesn't replace anyone.

00:04:13.960 --> 00:04:15.639
They enhance your support system.

00:04:15.879 --> 00:04:17.000
Ask about backups.

00:04:17.159 --> 00:04:20.360
If they're unavailable when you go into labor, who's the person that steps in?

00:04:20.519 --> 00:04:23.080
And can you meet the backup doula ahead of time?

00:04:23.319 --> 00:04:24.840
It's always okay to ask.

00:04:25.080 --> 00:04:28.039
Life happens and you deserve to know who might be stepping in.

00:04:28.199 --> 00:04:30.360
And finally, advocacy.

00:04:30.600 --> 00:04:34.600
How do they help families find their voice when things feel overwhelming?

00:04:34.840 --> 00:04:37.960
What does advocacy look like to them in the hospital setting?

00:04:38.120 --> 00:04:43.080
You want a doula who helps you speak up, not one who speaks over others.

00:04:43.240 --> 00:04:46.360
Someone who honors your choices, your pace, and your presence.

00:04:46.519 --> 00:04:48.759
Now, you don't have to ask all of these.

00:04:48.839 --> 00:04:53.079
Just pick a few that feel right for you or important to you and write them down.

00:04:53.319 --> 00:04:57.319
Most of the time you'll learn the most just from how the conversation flows.

00:04:57.560 --> 00:04:59.959
Do you feel relaxed, empowered, safe?

00:05:00.279 --> 00:05:01.720
That's the feeling you're looking for.

00:05:01.879 --> 00:05:03.560
And if it doesn't click, that's okay.

00:05:03.639 --> 00:05:04.680
You're not being rude.

00:05:04.839 --> 00:05:08.120
You're just doing what's best for your birth, and that matters.

00:05:08.519 --> 00:05:08.839
Okay.
